The Disillusion of the Middle Ground: Triangulation, Collusion, and Walking Away

The first time I heard the word “triangulation,” I didn’t truly understand what it meant, but I knew I needed to learn more. When this person brought it to my attention, it opened my eyes to the fact that this dynamic genuinely exists in many of our lives.

A committed partnership requires a protective perimeter. When tension enters a healthy home, two partners turn toward each other to solve it. But in dysfunctional systems, an entirely different architecture takes over: triangulation.

Triangulation occurs when one partner avoids direct accountability by pulling in a third party – most destructively, an adult child – to form a united front against the other partner.

The False Claim of “Equal Love” and “Neutrality”

One of the most insidious ways this dynamic hides in plain sight is through the distortion of fairness. A partner will claim they are simply “trying to be fair, right down the middle,” placing their love for an adult child and their love for their romantic partner on the exact same scale.

This is an intentional category error:

  • Parental love and romantic partnership occupy completely different dimensions. A parent’s bond with their child is rooted in guidance, unconditional care, and eventually, healthy adult separation. A romantic partnership is built on mutual fidelity, emotional priority, and joint decision-making.

  • “Neutrality” in the face of disrespect is complicity. When an adult child belittles, mocks, or excludes a partner, standing “right down the middle” is not balance. It is giving passive permission for the disrespect to continue.

  • Fear-driven parenting replaces integrity. The parent claims to seek peace, but beneath the surface lies a desperate fear of abandonment, a terror that holding the adult child accountable will cause them to withhold affection or label the parent the villain. The partner is then sacrificed as the scapegoat to keep the child placated.

When Triangulation Becomes Collusion

The dynamic deepens from poor boundaries into genuine betrayal when secrecy enters the fold. When an adult child is made the keeper of a parent’s private life, emotional wanderings, or outside infidelities, the triangle shifts from enmeshment to a collusive alliance.

  • Mutual absolution: When the adult child shares or normalizes dishonest relationship patterns, neither party holds the other to a standard of integrity. They validate each other’s worst behavior, treating outside partners as disposable.

  • Weaponized secrets: Inside jokes, knowing smirks across the room, and whispers about broken devices or hidden messages are the surface of a deeper deceit. The parent and child bond over what they keep from the partner.

  • Clarity, not confusion: The partner living outside this dynamic does not doubt their senses or wonder if they are “imagining things.” The clarity is immediate and sharp. The question is never “Am I crazy?”… it is … “How can anyone call this an authentic partnership?”

How to Walk Away from an Unbreakable Alliance

You cannot fix a triangle from within it, and you cannot negotiate integrity with two people who find comfort in mutual deception.

  • Step off the witness stand: A collusive unit functions like a kangaroo court. Any explanation, hurt feeling, or boundary you present will be taken back into the alliance to be dissected, mocked, and turned against you. Refuse to plead your case.

  • Stop breaking the triangle – drop the rope: The moment you stop competing for priority and stop demanding basic loyalty, the game collapses on their side. Let them have the closed dynamic they built.

  • Make an exit without an audit: You do not need a confession, an apology, or a signed admission of guilt to justify leaving. A persistent refusal to offer loyalty, mutual protection, and basic respect is all the reason required to close the door.

  • Reclaim your sovereignty: Walking away is not a defeat. It is the recognition that an intimate partnership cannot exist where there is a committee of two running the house. Your peace is worth far more than a seat at a table designed to keep you on the outside.
